Origin of the Alpaca

Alpacas are descendants of the Vicuna, one of South Americas most treasured animals. The first domestic alpacas appear in the genetic timeline about 6000 years ago, during the Incan Empire in the 14th Century. Unfortunately, these animals were almost driven to extinction during the Spanish conquest in the mid-15th century. They only survive today because of the native South American people. Who chose to flee with there most treasured alpacas into the Andes Mountains. It is believed that the alpacas that exist today pale in comparison to their native ancestors. Although the alpacas today are not as incredible as there ancestors, they are no less treasured by the people that choose to raise them today.
The United States opened the borders to import these precious animals in 1984 from South America. The import borders closed shortly after that and remain closed to preserve the US market. For now, the US alpaca industry is working hard with the genetic lines that it has, to make significant improvements in fleece quality. We are also working to increase production of this incredible fiber, so that it may be offered to more people.

You might get Llamas and alpacas confused at first glance. That is completely understandable considering they come from the same Camelidae family. There are 7 species included in this family and they have some very distinct characteristics. This family includes dromedary one hump Camel, entirely domesticated from Africa. The two humped Wild Bactrian camel found in China and Mongolia and the domesticated Bactrian camel from Asia. Guanacos, Llamas, Vicunas and Alpacas from South America. The most defining characteristics of this family are there long necks and the lack of a functioning hoof. Getting Started
Unlike my girls in the photo, you have some work to do. All successful companies start with a well defined plan. Start by asking yourself a few questions. What part of the alpaca industry do I want to focus on first? What is my budget? Do I have space at my current location to have alpacas or is boarding an option? What are my city or township ordinances regarding alpacas? I know it might seem like a lot but we are here to help.
